【Nambu Tekki – Ironware】Iwachu & Oigen: Which One Wins Your Heart?

国内旅行
In June, I visited two of the most famous Southern ironware workshops in Japan: Iwachu and Oigen. Southern ironware, or “Nambu Tekki (南部鉄器)” in Japanese, is a traditional craft that has been passed down for centuries in the Iwate Prefecture of Japan
I will share my experiences at these workshops and show you some of the cool things I saw!

If you’re looking to delve into the world of Nambu Tekki, two names stand out as the frontrunners: Iwachu and Oigen. Each foundry brings its unique charm and expertise to the craft, offering a diverse range of products to suit every need and style.

Oigen: Embracing Tradition and Innovation

While Iwachu charms with its extensive product range and factory,
Oigen stands out for its commitment to both tradition and innovation.

Premium line: Naked Finish

Their premium line, known as “naked finish,” showcases the raw beauty of Nambu Tekki, with a focus on functionality and minimalist design.

Oigen’s “naked finish” ironware is not just a visual treat; it’s also incredibly practical.

I personally bought their oval pan as my wife’s go-to cookware.

Uncoated yet rust-resistant, these teapots develop a rich black patina over time as oil is absorbed. With exceptional heat retention and a high surface temperature, they ensure even and consistent cooking. As our enthusiastic staff member enthusiastically explained, these teapots elevate the quality of your culinary creations to new heights.

These pans come uncoated, but don’t worry about rust. As you use them, the oil will seep in, transforming their gray surface into a beautiful, deep black.

They also retain heat incredibly well and have a high surface temperature, so your food will cook evenly and consistently.

The shop staff was super excited about these pans, raving about how they can seriously up your cooking game.

Hot Water Tasting

If you’re seeking a truly immersive Nambu Tekki experience, Oigen’s hot water tasting is not to be missed.

Witness the transformation of ordinary water into soft, flavorful hot water as it simmers in their Nambu Tekki kettle.
